How To Endure the Horror of Existence is a short film, being shot on location around the outer Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The film is the story of Thomas and his unconventional relationship with his therapist, Marshall.
As Production Designer on this film, I worked closely with the Director/Producer to create the unique world that Thomas exists in. The wardrobe was to have a particular aesthetic, with Thomas being troubled and drawn to certain motifs and clashing patterns. I also employed costume-maker Rachael Lee Perks to design two tribal costumes, and worked with her on the look and materials for these.
For the set design, I helped to style the location, which is the Director’s own home. We devised a colour palette for each room, and what the feel and flow of each should be. For Thomas’ room we decided on a blue theme with busy decorations that represented the main character’s chaotic mind. Part of the set was designed as the therapist’s office, for which we decided on pink walls to signify a safe place of rebirth.
For the props, everything was to have a hand-made feel to it, especially anything belonging to Thomas. Some of the props I organised included a hand-embroidered copy of Thus Spake Zarathustra, which I had sewn by Gail Cosgrove, and constructed myself. I also created a large staff for the therapist to use in one scene, using found wood and other materials.
The Horror of Existence is still in production, with filming to be completed in August 2016. More photos will be available soon!
